THE MIND SLAYER [modplot/signups/infopost]

THE MIND SLAYER
BASIC INFO

Danger! A psychic assassin has been hired to target the Legion of Super Heroes! Using mental techniques forbidden by UP law and taboo on Titan, they've linked the minds of many of the Legionnaires into a psychic daisychain. Hiding in their memories, the assassin seeks to find an opportune moment to kill one of them by aggravating one of their near-death experiences into either a fatal heart attack or total traumatic mental shutdown. With their minds linked, however, if one of them shuts down, they'll drag everyone with them. Teams of Legionnaires must explore one another's memories, racing against time before the mind slayer causes a deadly chain reaction.

SETTING

Their memories.

Having seized control of the mind of the Legion’s sous chef, the deadly assassin called Esper forced them to seed the Legion’s food with telepathic nanofactories that, at a set point, would lock the Legion’s minds together, forcing them into an amalgam of their innermost thoughts. Their minds lock together into a confusing hub-world of the settings most important to them, though not necessarily the settings that are most pleasant.

From there, they’ll have to wander into the confusing cacophony of their teammate’s memories, seeking out the ones the most likely for Esper to be meddling in, or hunting her down themselves. That is, assuming they don’t just take the chance to invade their teammate’s privacy.

WHO IS AFFECTED AND HOW

The nanofactories are pumping out machines that connect to the minds of their hosts, and can even tap the electronic minds of artificial intelligences if their physical ‘selves’ (such as an AI chip) have come into contact with an ‘infected’ user. The entire team has been filled with these nanofactories by now, but only the ones in range of Esper and one another will be affected.

PERCEPTION

When wandering through memories, the ‘doorways’, if there are any, will be decided by the owner’s personality. They might find themselves in a filing room, wandering a long hallway with many doors, stumbling through images smashing together, or just popping randomly from one memory to the next.

When settling into a memory, they’ll be observing it from the third person, not through the victim’s eyes. However, if the memory has a strong emotional attachment, they might be buffeted by the feelings the Legionnaire was experiencing at that moment, whether it be joy, rage, or crushing despair.

The Legionnaires must be careful: usually they’re invisible observers, but by exerting some force of will, they can actually alter the memories of the people they’re inside. This can be extremely dangerous, risking personality shifts or total mental shutdown if the changes are too radical.

ESPER

Esper, Meta Ulnoor, is a native of Titan and a skilled telepath who requested Legion membership several years ago. After being humiliated by then-Legionnaire Saturn Queen, Esper stormed out of her tryout with tears in her eyes, vowing revenge. Since then, she’s looked for a way to make herself the most powerful telepath alive, using illegal electronics and machinery as a crutch. Once she’s gotten her revenge on the Legion, she plans on tracking down Saturn Queen, framing her for the crime, mind-frying the psy-witch, and taking her place in the hallowed halls of Legion World in good standing after getting revenge for their fallen comerades.

As a telepath, she’s skilled but her power doesn’t even approach those of the Legion’s former psychics. However, with the machines she uses to amplify her abilities, she can become an incredibly dangerous astral warrior. However, as dangerous as her tools are to her victims, they can be moreso to her if her will is overcome in the mental realms.

ESPER’S TOOLS

Esper’s nanomachines will work to alter the Legionnaire’s memories either by exacerbating the trauma or introducing unexpected new danger where there wasn’t any before. A memory of being totally overwhelmed by enemies, sudden tragedy or danger inserted into a happy memory, or just enhancing the level of emotion in the scene are all possibilities.

The memories that are being altered will stand out somehow, and somewhere in them are mental generators, cylindrical machines the size of bongo drums that work their telepathic magic to change the memories. They’re invisible to the victim and are generally tucked away somewhere ‘unnoticeable’, but they’ll have a slight purple glow to them for anyone foreign to the victim’s mind. Destroying them will slowly revert the changes to the memories, as there’s no driving will behind them.

Each victim will have 1-3 mental generators, chosen at random by the player.

Somewhere, in one of the victims (Who will be RNGed from people who have signed up for it in the comments below and have filled out the Activity Bonus) Esper will be hiding. Frustrated by her machine’s lack of power, she’s taken matters into their own hand and will be trying to straight up murder the Legionnaire herself, using her telepathic abilities to make herself more powerful than any one hero has a chance of dealing with.

HOW NPCING WILL WORK:

The mods will npc Esper in combat. Any extras, like if someone’s surrounded by more gunmen than they remember, will have to be handled by the players in charge of that character’s memories. They’ll also decide where the mental generators are located and what effects they’re having. In short, each player will be running each scenario until Esper gets involved, at which point she’ll take over.

PLOT START

Signups are open until the end of the plot unless you plan on confronting Esper. This is a gamewide plot, open to all, so signups here are largely for planning.

You may sign up to fight Esper until: 6/13/17 @ 12pm EST, but you must have completed the Activity Bonus in your last AC in order to do so. The character she’s hiding in will fight as well, and you should say whether you want to fight her or host and fight her in your signup post. Only four people will be chosen to face Esper.

Plot will go up: 6/8/17.

Please direct signups, questions, concerns, plotting and other issues to the comments below.

Widowmaker

[personal profile] araignee_du_soir 2017-06-08 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
I'm going to offer two varieties of memories for teammates to wander into:

1. The night in Paris when Amélie (before she was Widowmaker) danced Swan Lake and met her future husband, Gérard Lacroix. The memory alteration will involve an assassination attempt by a unknown man.

2. The fragmented pieces of what Widowmaker can remember of the medical experimentation that Talon did to her that changed her physiology. The memory alteration will have the equipment failing mid-procedure. Fair warning that this memory will contain elements of torture, body horror, and mad science.

Wash

I need to do a little canon review to figure out which two scenarios I'll be offering, but Wash is in. Keep in mind that Wash has some horrifying stuff in his past, so your character will probably get a front-row seat to violence and insanity.

Violence and Insanity you say? Seras will see about that. Wash can come see some supernatural insanity in her mind.

Elphelt's memory for this will be the finale of Xrd -SIGN-, where Elphelt's True Self is activated, and she decides she needs to destroy herself in order to save humanity and attempts to self-destruct.

Ky Kiske, Sol Badguy, Sin Kiske, and Ramlethal Valentine will by NPCs in this scenario as they were there to witness this event. It's Ramlethal's plea that eventually reaches her and helps her decide to live on while the heroes of the story find a way to get her back from the her "Mother", and keep her from destroying the world against her will, but the moment is super tense and reliving it will not be good for El.

Before Sol can get through to El and break her free from "Mother"'s command, there is a potential here to battle Backyard!El, who is the emotionless destruction machine briefly witnessed in Spy Who Sprocked Us.

Raynor

[personal profile] savinglives 2017-06-08 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
Raynor will have two specific memories that can be altered:

1. New Gettysburg, where Kerrigan 'died'. A mission by the Sons of Korhal where the Zerg were invading the planet Tarsonis, and Lieutenant Kerrigan was tasked with fighting the Protoss so the Zerg could continue destroying the planet. Originally, it ends with the Zerg overwhelming Kerrigan's position, and Mengsk abandoning her, to Raynor's emphatic disapproval. The memory will be altered to include Raynor in that mission, so he can be overwhelmed and killed alongside Kerrigan.

2. Aiur, after the Overmind is destroyed. Raynor is helping the Protoss evacuate their Zerg-infested home planet, protecting a warp gate that leads to the planet Shakuras. Originally, it ends with the Protoss being successfully evacuated. The memory will be altered to have the warp gate be destroyed by the Zerg, leaving Raynor and the remaining Protoss stranded on Aiur with no hope for rescue.

Fair warning, both memories would be actual war scenes, involving small groups of people holding their positions against an endless wave of bug monsters. There will be copious amounts of death and destruction.

Gohan

[personal profile] fourstars 2017-06-08 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
Alright, so, I have three memories for Gohan. (I had to work really hard to narrow this down to three.)

1. Saiyan Invasion, where Gohan (5yo) and his dad's friends have to fight Nappa and Vegeta. Originally, it ends with everyone except Gohan and Krillin dying, Krillin being incapacitated, and Gohan about to have his head stepped in by Nappa until Goku shows up. The memory will be altered to have Goku arrive too late, with Nappa having ample time to crush Gohan's head if he doesn't fight back.

2. Cell Games, while Cell is torturing Gohan (11yo) by making everyone else fight the Cell Juniors. Originally, it leads to Android 16 being killed, blinding Gohan with so much fury that he turns Super Saiyan 2. The memory will be altered to have Mr. Satan refuse to throw 16's head, leading to Gohan taking longer to transform. Which will lead to the Cell Juniors actually killing people, in the order of Tien, Yamcha, Krillin, Trunks, Vegeta, Piccolo, and Goku. This could lead to a complete mental shutdown due to trauma.

3. Majin Buu's Revival, when Gohan (18yo) and the Supreme Kai are fighting Fat Buu. Originally, it leads to Gohan being blasted away by Buu, left for dead, but ultimately still breathing. The memory will be altered to have Babidi order Buu to "play with the Saiyan", causing Buu to find Gohan, and physically beating him up with childlike glee, with no one around to stop him.

Shepard

[personal profile] thebioticwoman 2017-06-08 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
Weirdly enough, the time Shepard literally died isn't that emotionally fraught for her, so the memories are going to feature times where her death would have also meant the deaths of thousands or millions:

The Skyllian Blitz: As a very young officer, Shepard had her leave on Elysium, an idyllic colony world on the fringe of human space, interrupted by a massive pirate attack intended to kneecap human settlement in the region. She rallied and led the undertrained and underequipped colonial militia in a defense of the planet's capital. When their line broke at a critical position, Shepard held it single-handedly for hours until an Alliance task group arrived to relieve the colony. In the real world, she survived and was awarded the space future equivalent of the Medal of Honor. In the memory, she is going to be overwhelmed by the attackers. (Warnings for your standard mil sf violence vs. funny forehead aliens.)

Assault on the Collector Base: Only a few months ago, Shepard led a suicide mission against the technologically superior and extremely creepy bug aliens called the Collectors, who'd been stealing entire colonies and melting them down into genetic material because Reasons. The interior of the Collector base is reminiscent of a giant, creepy beehive slash termite mound, filled with humanoid bug monsters who want nothing more than to kill the crap out of Shepard & co. Against all odds, she and her crew survived it, but in the memory, they will be overwhelmed and killed. (Warning for more of the usual mil sf violence and some H. R. Giger-lite body horror/creature and environment design.)

Ray's memory will be the original Stay-Puft attack, altered so that the Ghostbusters will be split up and unable to cross the streams to defeat Gozer. Egon, Winston, and Peter will be NPCs in this scenario.

In addition to Stay-Puft, Legionnaires will also have to confront theMarshmallow Minis in order to find the generator.

2B

[personal profile] grumpylady 2017-06-08 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
Assault: A goliath-class robot goes on a rampage and attacks the city ruins. 2B and 9S are originally supposed to board their flight units in order to take down the gigantic machine. However, the altered memory will have the two of them caught off guard by a machine-generated EMP that leaves them both immobile. Though they remain conscious and aware, they can't move until their systems finish rebooting. Which wouldn't be so bad if they still didn't have to deal with a number of other hostile robots, the goliath-class included.

Long Live The King: 2B and 9S are ordered to kill A2, a traitor to YoRHa who has just killed the Forest Kingdom's ruling monarch: a baby robot. Originally, 2B and 9S fight A2 to a stalemate with A2 leaving the scene. The altered memory will have A2 gaining the upper hand and expressly attempt to kill them both.

Become As Gods: 2B and Pascal need to escape and abandoned factory while fighting through hordes of fanatic and highly religious robots intent of killing everyone (non-believers included) out of the belief that it it'll make them into gods. The original sequence has 9S helping in the background to provide an escape route but he'll be entirely absent for the altered memory. Without a way out, it'll only be a matter of time before they both get overwhelmed by the fanatics, especially when the big guns get brought out. This particular memory will feature frequent robot suicide.

Will characters know which of their teammates wander into their memories after Esper is defeated and they're all back to normal?
agnominal: (Default)

[personal profile] agnominal 2017-06-08 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Alright so. One of the traumatic experiences I'm thinking of takes place in a plane of existence where everything is abstract and shaped by the mind observing it. For instance, there are demons that appear as whatever you fear the most.

Would the empathetic nature of viewing these memories allow them to remain abstract and appear as whatever the person who views them fears the most? Or would they appear as whatever the memory-holder fears most? I think it'd be interesting the former, but I understand if logistics make it the latter.

Decisions have been made!

1. The Great White North: The final battle with the Meta. Tex has already fallen, so the fight has become a desperate bid to keep Epsilon out of the Meta's hands. Wash isn't supposed to win this fight - just hold out until the cavalry arrives. However, memory alterations have made Epsilon less able to escape and have put additional minefields on the battlefield, so Wash is losing a lot faster than he's supposed to.

2. Ground Control to Major Tom: The final battle on Chorus. Felix is dead, Locus has disappeared, the story about Chorus and the call for help has been sent out...and Malcolm Hargrove himself has arrived, dropping a fleet of Mantises (giant bipedal robots with turrets) onto the battlefield, because if he can't win this game of chess, he's going to flip the goddamn table and leave no survivors. Wash and Carolina are staying on the ground with Chorus' remaining soldiers, fighting a desperate battle while the Reds and Blues head up to Hargrove's ship to remotely disable the Mantises. With the memory alterations, the battle gets more and more desperate and more and more people are killed, because the signal simply doesn't come.
lovernotafighter: (All sides are my good sides)

Tucker

[personal profile] lovernotafighter 2017-06-08 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
1. One of the memories will be of when Tucker was trapped inside the desert alien temple while “C.T.” and his people effectively try to kill him with various assaults. This is going to be during his time alone when his distress signals were ignored and when he was fighting off an entire group with very strong and superior weapons alone.

2. The second memory will be of Tucker and Epsilon’s trap to get Felix to admit who he was and what plans he had been executing. The encounter is a success for the Blues, but Felix does ultimately end up stabbing Tucker the jerk.

Inertia

Thad's going to have two memories to go into; both connected by a hub of sorts, represented by a video monitor lined hallway inside Craydl. All the monitors will have something playing on them (some actual memories of his, while others are looped feeds of things he was taught about the Flash or Impulse), but only two of them will actually be gates that can be entered.

1. Speed Force Battle - While masquerading as Bart Allen, Thad took a dying Max Mercury into the speedforce with the initial intent to save him by having him reconnect directly with the force itself. But as Max goes on about how much he appreciates everything 'Bart' has been doing for him over the past month and how much he cares for him, Thad has a complete breakdown, reveals that he isn't Bart, and threatens to kill him. Despite Max attempting to talk him down, Thad tries to kill him anyway. Originally the only thing that kept him from going through with it was the real Bart coming on to the scene and stopping him, and finally succeeding in talking him down.

But the memory will be altered so that Bart doesn't show up, and the goal won't be to keep Thad alive but to instead stop him from killing Max (which could cause a mental shut down), or to find the mental generators before he can kill him.

2. Confrontation with President Thawne - Before being pulled to this universe, Thad had attempted to confront his creator. This is an incomplete memory that the generators will attempt to have end in his death. While Thawne himself wouldn't be too hard to take down (as he's just a normal human), he does has the Science Police at his beck and call.
